Chief Development Officer
Chief Development Officer – Administration – Full-time
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Chief Development Officer (CDO) serves a part of the Senior Management Team. This position reports to the President and CEO and works closely with the Foundation Board of Directors. The CDO will plan, coordinate and assure the implementation of strategies to develop donors, funding, and contributions to support the organization. The CDO will help to foster a culture of philanthropy within the organization and lead staff and volunteers to institutionalize philanthropy and fund development within the organization. The CDO will be responsible for donor management, research and cultivation, gift processing and recognition.
Reports to: President/CEO FLSA: EXEMPT
Essential Duties:
- Work with President and CEO and Foundation Board to plan the organization’s course in terms of messaging and fund development strategies.
- Provide direction and support for Foundation Board Members in their fund development efforts.
- Lead efforts in developing effective and consistent messaging.
- Develop annual revenue goals and plans to diversify and increase organizational fundraising through a comprehensive development strategy.
- Develop strategies to increase individual giving levels.
- Work with CEO and Foundation Board to facilitate short and long-term development strategies.
- Help to recruit, train, and motivate fundraising volunteers.
- Foster culture of philanthropy and ensure that fund development is executed in keeping with the organization’s values, vision, and mission.
- Cultivate revenue streams and avenues for fundraising while furthering the overall mission of the organization.
- Establish a balanced mix of donor sources and fundraising programs, tailored to the specific needs of the organization, to attract and retain donors and fundraising volunteers.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with major donors.
- Establish performance measures, monitor results, and evaluate the efficacy of fund development system.
- Maintain accountability and ensure compliance will all regulations and laws, as well as the code of ethics for fundraising professionals
- Oversee development activities of support staff including database management, special events, communications, gift acknowledgment, and grant writing.
- Prepare reports and presentations for President and CEO, Board Members, community groups, potential donors, etc. as needed and as requested.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated successful experience in management and implementation of a successful, comprehensive fund development program.
- Minimum of seven to ten years senior level development experience.
- Extensive experience in identification and cultivation of donors.
- Experience working with Boards and volunteers.
- Experience in database strategy and maintenance.
- Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) highly preferred.
- Strong research skills.
- Analytical skills and ability to analyze data.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to motivate others around a common goal or mission.
- Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently.
- Some evening or weekend work required; limited travel may be required.
- Minimum of bachelor’s degree required.
